'Summary of Chandalika by Rabindranath Tagore'
Thursday morning or say noon 12:30 PM, our English class started (I always say this😄)
We entered the class (Virtual one) with a question. Which is better? Same caste marriage or inter-caste marriage? You may have conflict right now if you think. Isn't it the interesting one? In today's generation, we have contrasting views upon this also. Some may favor and some may not and both have their reasons to prove right!!
OK OK so, I was excited for the today's session, about the topic we are going to study as you are to read this blog😁🤗.
Chandalika👩🦳(Rabindranath Tagore)
You may question what is this?
It was our today's topic and yes it's a word at first, simple😄.
Next--
Ok, so Chandalika has come from the Sanskrit word Chandal which means 'badmas' or bad or also a lower caste group in India who are untouchables and burn corpses. It is a female form of chandal.
Before going after the lessons that I understood from this chapter, I would like to make you aware about the characters.
Mother-rooted in traditional systems, performs black 🎩 magic (witch) and loves her daughter.
Prakriti-simply nature, lower caste lady, selfish attitude, conflicting and contradictory attitude and yearns to challenge the social norms.
Ananda-disciple of Buddha, celibate monk and symbolises peace and pleasure.
Chandalika is a drama. It is about the realisation by a Chandal girl that she is a human being like others and that it is a mistaken on her part to think herself beneath the notice of human beings who belong to upper castes.
Notes~
The play is a very strong presentation of past ritual of untouchability. It represents very powerful energies required to survive in the form of Prakriti (nature), Mother (maya) and Ananda (peace and pleasure).
This is all about today's session with great learning with our all-time favourite sir, Eak prasad sir.
